Gas Safety Week 2024: Ensuring Safety in the Construction Industry

As Gas Safety Week (GSW) kicks off across the UK from 9th to 15th September, the construction industry is reminded of the critical importance of gas safety. This year’s theme, Checking – Every Check Counts, emphasises the necessity of regular gas safety checks to prevent potential hazards in both residential and commercial buildings.

Gas Safe Register, the UK’s official registration body for gas engineers and businesses, has launched a new comedic public service announcement film titled When The Gas Goes, narrated by actor Will Mellor. Best known for his roles in TV dramas such as Mr Bates vs The Post Office, Two Pints of Lager and Hollyoaks, Mellor shares his personal experience of returning from holiday to find his boiler had failed, underscoring the importance of annual gas safety checks.

The film humorously depicts the everyday inconveniences caused by faulty gas appliances, such as missing a shower before a crucial job interview or being left without heating after a holiday. It serves as a reminder to householders and construction professionals alike to ensure gas appliances are checked annually by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

In their latest press release, Gas Safe Register highlights the dangers of skipping regular checks and stresses that inspections should always be conducted by a qualified engineer. This message is particularly relevant for the construction industry, where safety standards must be rigorously maintained to protect both workers and occupants.

Gas Safe Register is urging UK households and construction professionals to ensure their gas appliances are safety checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The Register’s latest inspection data reveals that 1 in 5 UK homes have an unsafe gas appliance.

Rob Denman, Head of Professional and Field Services at Gas Safe Register, added, Small inconveniences really can put a dampener on your day. However, being prepared in advance can help reduce the chances of issues occurring. This is especially the case with our gas appliances which are so important for our daily routines.

Getting an annual gas safety check can help minimise potential disruption to your household or construction project. It is a small investment that could save you thousands in repair bills further down the line, should something go wrong. More importantly, it gives you peace of mind that they’re in safe working order.

Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas businesses registered to work safely and legally on boilers, cookers, fires, and all other gas appliances. By law, anyone working with gas must be listed on the Register. To find a local Gas Safe registered engineer in your area, visit GasSafeRegister.co.uk for more information.
