The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has received approval from London’s deputy mayor for planning, Jules Pipe, to redevelop the former Wimbledon Park golf course. This ambitious project promises to bring a host of benefits to the local community and beyond.
The redevelopment will create significant employment opportunities, with an average of 50 to 400 construction workers expected to be employed daily from 2025 to 2033. This influx of jobs will provide a substantial boost to the local economy, fostering growth and development in the area.
Moreover, the addition of 38 new grass courts and a new show court will elevate Wimbledon’s status as the premier tennis venue globally. By hosting the Wimbledon qualifying event on-site for the first time, the AELTC will ensure that Wimbledon remains on par with other grand slam tournaments, solidifying its reputation as the greatest tennis court in the world.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who is also the Secretary of State for Planning & Housing, has confirmed she will not intervene in the application, paving the way for this transformative project to proceed.
Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe commented that the transformation of the former private golf course will offer substantial benefits to the local community, the broader capital and the UK economy. These benefits include increased access to green spaces and sports facilities, new parkland and numerous job opportunities. Hosting the qualifying events on the same site as the Championships will elevate Wimbledon to the same level as other grand slam tournaments, ensuring it remains one of the premier sporting events globally. The project promises a wide array of economic, social, and cultural advantages, contributing to a fairer, greener, and more prosperous London for all.
We need more leaders like Angela Rayner and Jules Pipe to make bold decisions that boost the UK economy and position London as a hub of innovation and a top tourist destination.
