Concrete ferro scanning is an essential service for detecting and positioning rebar within reinforced concrete structures. Swantest utilises the latest technology to provide detailed insights into sub-surface conditions, ensuring the safety and integrity of construction projects.
Swantest employs state-of-the-art equipment, including the Hilti and Proceq, which allows for precise detection of cover depth, bar diameter, bar spacing and mesh layout up to 600mm below the surface.
Swantest offers two main types of ferro scanning surveys:
Quick Scans: Ideal for clients who need immediate results, quick scans mark the lateral position of rebar directly onto the concrete surface using chalk or paint. This method is perfect for those planning to drill or core through concrete, as it provides instant feedback and helps avoid reinforcement during drilling.
3D Image Scans: For more detailed information, image scans are conducted and analysed using specialist software. This method takes longer but provides comprehensive data on cover depth, bar diameter, bar spacing and overall mesh layout. The results are integrated into reports with 3D & CAD drawings as needed.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scanning
In addition to ferro scanning, Swantest also offers GPR concrete scanning using the Hilti PS1000 and Proceq GPR Live systems. GPR scanning provides a detailed picture of sub-surface conditions, identifying voids, cracks, reinforcing bars, non-ferrous services and changes in surface conditions. This method offers several advantages, including the ability to calculate slab thickness, view multiple layers of reinforcement, and produce 3D and cross-sectional images of the concrete structure.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
