Ferrovial Secures Contract to Deliver Innovative High Voltage Cable Tunnel for National Grid
Ferrovial Construction has been awarded a significant £230 million contract by National Grid to design and build a 2.2km high voltage (400kV) cable tunnel as part of the Grain to Tilbury electricity infrastructure upgrade project. This project marks Ferrovial's first collaboration with National Grid and underscores their commitment to innovative and sustainable construction methods.
Project Overview
The Grain to Tilbury project is a key component of National Grid's extensive infrastructure upgrade initiative, known as The Great Grid Upgrade. This ambitious program represents the largest overhaul of the UK's electricity network in generations. The project, set to run from early 2025 until Q1 2029, will be delivered by an integrated joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and BEMO (Ferrovial BEMO JV).
Key Features
✅ High Voltage Cable Tunnel: The project includes the construction of a 2.2km long high voltage (400kV) cable tunnel.
✅ Deep Shafts and Compounds: Two 35m deep shafts (15m and 12m in diameter), headhouses, and Cable Sealing End (CSE) compounds will be constructed.
✅ Advanced Engineering Techniques: The project will employ state-of-the-art technology and advanced engineering techniques to ensure the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
One of the standout features of this project is the use of a Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM). This technology allows for simultaneous excavation and installation of the final lining from the surface, significantly reducing construction time and minimising environmental impact. The VSM's ability to operate under groundwater conditions makes it particularly suitable for the Grain to Tilbury project. This will be only the second time this method is used in the UK.
Ferrovial Construction's extensive experience in delivering complex tunnelling projects in the UK positions them as an industry leader. Their portfolio includes notable projects such as the Thames Tideway Tunnel (FLO JV), the Silvertown Tunnel (Riverlinx CJV), the Northern Line Extension (FLO JV), and three contracts on the Elizabeth Line (BFK JV), including the longest stretch of tunnel between Royal Oak and Farringdon, as well as Farringdon Station itself.
The Grain to Tilbury project will further solidify Ferrovial Construction's presence in the UK market, showcasing their ability to deliver large-scale, innovative infrastructure solutions.
