Silvertown Tunnel is Now Open: What You Need to Know!
The Silvertown Tunnel has officially opened its doors, transforming cross-Thames travel in East London. This major infrastructure project, designed to alleviate the notorious congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel, brings both relief and new considerations for drivers. So, what do you need to know?
Firstly, the introduction of toll charges is a significant change. Both the Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels now operate with tolls between 6:00AM and 10:00PM, seven days a week. For instance, a typical car journey will incur a charge, but residents of Newham, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets should check if they qualify for the 50% discount. Imagine a resident of Canning Town, who regularly drives to Greenwich for work. Previously, they faced unpredictable delays at the Blackwall Tunnel. Now, they have a faster alternative, but must factor in the toll.
Secondly, the tunnel's opening is coupled with enhanced public transport options. New, zero-emission bus routes, such as the 129, now run through the tunnel, offering greater connectivity. If you're travelling from North Greenwich to Silvertown, this new service provides a direct and more efficient route. Additionally, cyclists can take advantage of the new free shuttle service, a welcome addition for those commuting or exploring the area.
Thirdly, it is important to remember the exemptions, and discounts. Blue badge holders for example are exempt from the charges. If you are a small business owner with a registered company in one of the approved boroughs, you will need to apply for the business discount. Also, TFL licensed taxis are exempt.
Finally, while the tunnel promises to ease congestion, environmental concerns remain. TfL has committed to monitoring air quality closely. For example, real-time air quality monitoring stations have been installed at tunnel entrances and exits, and the data will be publicly available. We will keep you updated on the published data. The tunnel's impact on local air quality will be a key factor in assessing its overall success.
