Springfield Park Opens: London’s Biggest New Park in Over a Decade
Tooting has welcomed a major new green landmark with the official opening of Springfield Park, the largest new public park created in London since the 2012 Olympics. Mayor Sadiq Khan cut the ribbon on the 32-acre site yesterday, calling it “a huge new space for families, children and communities to enjoy for generations.”
Developed on the grounds of the historic Springfield Hospital in Wandsworth, the park is the centrepiece of a wider regeneration masterplan delivering around 800 new homes, restored listed buildings, and new healthcare facilities. Landscaping work has been extensive, transforming former institutional grounds into meadows, woodlands, ponds, playgrounds and open lawns.
The design team focused on sustainable planting and biodiversity, creating habitats for pollinators and birds while giving local people much-needed green space. Extensive paths and cycle routes connect the park with surrounding streets and public transport, reflecting London’s push for greener, healthier, more walkable neighbourhoods.
Contractors worked carefully to preserve historic features including mature trees and Victorian boundary walls while introducing modern amenities like a cafĂ© and events lawn. The project was delivered through a partnership between South West London and St George’s NHS Trust, Barratt London, and Wandsworth Council.
Springfield Park’s opening is not just a win for Tooting—it’s part of London’s broader push to rebalance growth with access to nature. As the capital densifies, high-quality new parks like this help ensure liveable neighbourhoods for all.
