Overbury Leads £1.1bn Refurbishment of Citi’s Canary Wharf Tower

In one of the largest commercial refurbishment projects ever undertaken in London, Overbury has been appointed to deliver a landmark £1.1bn overhaul of Citi’s 42-storey headquarters at 25 Canada Square, Canary Wharf.

Originally unveiled in early 2022, the scale of Citi’s investment has now been confirmed to be more than ten times initial estimates, reflecting the US banking giant’s long-term commitment to the UK economy and its role as a global financial hub.

Transforming a Modern Icon

Completed just two decades ago, 25 Canada Square is already set for a complete reimagining. Citi’s aim is to provide state-of-the-art, sustainable and people-focused workplaces that will future-proof its London operations and reflect its ambitions for the decades ahead.

David Livingstone, Citi’s Chief Client Officer, said:

“This significant investment, which I am pleased to say is progressing on schedule and within budget, underscores Citi’s deep roots and future ambitions in the UK. As our second-largest market and a critical financial hub, the UK holds strategic importance to how we serve our clients globally.”

A Boost for UK Supply Chains

Around two-thirds of Citi’s £1.1bn spend will go directly to UK-based firms and workers, creating substantial opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the supply chain.

“At the time of completion, almost 6,000 people will have worked on the project, many of whom live within a 25-mile radius of the building,” Citi confirmed. This focus on local sourcing has already brought in a diverse network of SMEs and specialist manufacturers from across the country.

Edward Skyler, Citi’s Head of Enterprise Services and Public Affairs, added:

“It’s a statement to our thousands of colleagues that they deserve best-in-class workspaces and to our communities that they deserve our lasting commitment.”

Delivering on Vision

With construction led by Overbury, the office fit-out and refurbishment specialist within the Morgan Sindall Group, the project is expected to set new standards in workplace design, sustainability, and user experience. Workers are due to begin moving back into the refurbished tower from spring next year.

Citi currently employs around 14,000 people across its UK offices in London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Jersey, making the Canada Square redevelopment a defining project not just for Citi, but for London’s commercial property landscape.
