Courtauld Launches £82m Transformation of Somerset House Campus

The Courtauld Institute of Art has announced an £82 million transformation of its Somerset House campus, marking one of the most significant heritage and education redevelopment projects currently underway in London. Described as a once-in-a-generation opportunity, the scheme will overhaul large parts of the Grade I–listed complex to bring all teaching, research and gallery functions under a single, modernised layout, while respecting the historic character of the 18th-century building on the Strand.

For London’s construction and conservation sectors, the project represents a technically demanding challenge. Redeveloping Somerset House requires sensitive structural interventions, conservation-grade materials, upgraded building services, and the careful integration of modern MEP systems into fabric that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Improving accessibility, circulation, and digital infrastructure without altering the architectural identity of the building adds another layer of complexity, pushing the design and engineering teams to balance heritage preservation with contemporary academic needs.

Once completed, the reimagined campus will offer enhanced studios, lecture rooms, digital learning environments and research facilities, while also improving the gallery spaces that house The Courtauld’s internationally renowned art collection. The redevelopment strengthens London’s role as a global centre for culture, education and the arts, providing students and visitors with a significantly improved experience and breathing new life into one of the city’s most important cultural institutions.

At a time when major cultural capital projects are becoming rarer due to inflation and shifting budgets, the Courtauld’s decision to proceed with an £82 million investment is a strong vote of confidence in London’s built-environment capabilities. It also offers a major boost to the specialist trades, architects, engineers and contractors who work at the intersection of heritage, regeneration and high-end refurbishment.
