PlanningMapsUK Launches Online Ordnance Survey Mapping Platform for UK Planning Applications

A new browser-based mapping platform aims to simplify the production of licensed Ordnance Survey plans for planning applications, architecture and property development projects across Great Britain.

PlanningMapsUK has launched an online service allowing homeowners, architects, designers and property professionals to produce licensed Ordnance Survey mapping directly through a browser. The platform enables users to search for a property by address or postcode, identify the required site area, mark planning boundaries and generate mapping suitable for planning and design purposes.

The service supports commonly requested planning scales including 1:1250 and 1:2500 location plans, together with more detailed 1:200 and 1:500 block and site plans. Plans can be produced in A4 or A3 format and downloaded digitally following purchase.

For property professionals requiring editable mapping, PlanningMapsUK can also provide Ordnance Survey data in DWG and DXF formats for use within architectural and CAD workflows.

Streamlining Planning Application Mapping

Location and block plans remain a routine requirement for many planning applications, from residential extensions and loft conversions through to new-build developments, outbuildings and changes of use.

PlanningMapsUK has designed the platform around this early-stage planning process, allowing users to visually select the area they require and add features commonly associated with planning submissions, including red and blue site boundaries, surrounding roads, nearby properties and a north point.

The company says the objective is to reduce some of the complexity traditionally associated with obtaining correctly licensed mapping.

A PlanningMapsUK spokesperson said the platform was developed to make the process easier for users who may not have specialist mapping knowledge, allowing customers to find their property, select the required area and produce an appropriately licensed Ordnance Survey plan.

CAD Mapping for Architects and Designers

Alongside standard PDF planning plans, the platform also targets architects, planning consultants, surveyors and developers requiring mapping that can be incorporated directly into design software.

Its professional mapping service provides Ordnance Survey data in formats including DWG and DXF, with files available using British National Grid coordinates. Optional terrain and contour information can also be added where elevation information is required for a project.

This allows the same service to cover relatively simple requirements, such as producing a location plan for a residential planning application, through to editable mapping for larger architectural and development projects.

Making Professional Mapping More Accessible

Rather than requiring customers to work with specialist GIS software or coordinate systems, PlanningMapsUK starts with a conventional property search before allowing users to visually define the mapping area and select the appropriate output.

The service currently provides mapping across Great Britain, with PlanningMapsUK saying it intends to continue expanding the range of digital mapping products available through the platform.
