Building a Legacy: Zerani Scears' Vision for a More Inclusive Future

In a construction industry where women remain significantly underrepresented, Zerani Scears stands as a beacon of inspiration. As the founder and Managing Director of AZ Scears Management Services Limited (AZS), a thriving construction planning consultancy, Scears has not only carved her own path to success but is also actively shaping a more inclusive future for the industry.

From Humble Beginnings to Building a Legacy

Scears' journey began in South Africa, where she honed her skills before relocating to the UK in 2002.  She quickly established herself within major construction companies, gaining invaluable experience before venturing into freelance work. This period proved to be the seed from which AZS would eventually blossom.

Driven by a desire to break free from industry norms and create a company built on her own vision, Scears took a leap of faith in 2009 by establishing AZS. Initially a solo operation, the company reflected Scears' passion for construction and her depth of knowledge. However, as demand for AZS' services grew, so did Scears' vision for a thriving team.

Building a Team and Empowering Others

Last year saw a significant turning point for AZS. Recognising the potential in Cameron, initially hired for administrative tasks, Scears nurtured his interest in marketing, propelling him into a role that expanded AZS' reach while simultaneously fostering his career development. This exemplifies Scears' leadership style, which prioritises not just business growth but also the personal and professional growth of her team members.

The company has since transitioned from a home-based operation to a dedicated office space, attracting talented planners, five of whom are women. This statistic stands in stark contrast to the male-dominated nature of the construction industry, demonstrating Scears' commitment to diversity and inclusion.

More Than Just Business

What truly sets Scears apart is her unwavering dedication to empowering others. Her focus extends beyond delivering exceptional results for clients. She actively mentors the younger generation, passing on her knowledge and encouraging them to reach their full potential. Charlotte Bailham's story serves as a testament to this.

"Before joining AZS," says Charlotte, "I worked as a hairdresser for seven years, four of which I spent as Zerani's stylist. During that time, she recognised my potential and inspired me to consider a career change. When the time came, she welcomed me into AZS, offering guidance and support that has been life-changing."

A Community Built on Shared Values

AZS has transcended the typical construction consultancy model, evolving into a collaborative community where everyone's voice is valued. Scears' story is one of resilience, determination, and a genuine commitment to creating opportunities for others. It is a story that deserves to be heard and serves as a powerful inspiration for aspiring professionals, both within and beyond the construction industry.
