London Tube & Train Closures This Weekend: 17–18 October 2026

London faces an unusually disruptive transport weekend on 17–18 October 2026, with major closures affecting the Piccadilly line to Heathrow, the District line in west London, London Overground services, London Victoria, Gatwick Express, Stansted Airport trains and West Coast Main Line services from Euston.

The most important warning is for anyone travelling to an airport or using west London. There will be no Piccadilly line trains between Hammersmith and Heathrow or Uxbridge throughout the weekend, no National Rail services to or from London Victoria on Sunday, no direct Stansted Express trains from London, and no Southern trains between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction on either Saturday or Sunday.

London Construction Magazine has checked the principal closures against Transport for London, National Rail, Network Rail and operator notices. This page is designed as the central weekend summary. For events affected by the disruption, see LCM's What's On in London This Weekend guide and its Free Things to Do in London guide.

Piccadilly line closed to Heathrow and Uxbridge

The largest Tube closure affects the western end of the Piccadilly line. TfL confirms that from 01:00 on Saturday 17 October and throughout Sunday 18 October there will be no Piccadilly line service between Hammersmith and Heathrow, including all airport terminals, or between Hammersmith and Uxbridge. The closure also includes the relevant Friday and Saturday Night Tube periods. The Piccadilly line will continue operating between Hammersmith and Cockfosters, so this is not a full-line shutdown.

TfL is operating several replacement bus services. PL1 links Hammersmith with stations through west London towards Osterley, PL3 connects Hammersmith with Heathrow Central, PL4 serves the Uxbridge-side corridor as far as Rayners Lane, and PL7 runs between Hammersmith and Heathrow via Hounslow and Hatton Cross. Overnight journeys on PL7 also serve Heathrow Terminal 5.

For Heathrow: TfL advises passengers to use the Elizabeth line from central London. Heathrow Express also provides a rail option from Paddington, subject to the operating timetable on the day.

For Uxbridge: use the Metropolitan line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge.

District line closed between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway

The District line's Ealing Broadway branch is also closed on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be no District line service between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway, affecting Chiswick Park, Acton Town, Ealing Common and Ealing Broadway. TfL replacement bus services PL1 and PL4 cover much of the affected corridor. Passengers at Ealing Broadway can also use the Central line and Elizabeth line for central London journeys.

London Overground: Weaver, Lioness and Mildmay changes

Weaver line: there will be no service between Edmonton Green and Cheshunt throughout Saturday and Sunday. Replacement bus L2 runs twice per hour between Enfield Town and Cheshunt via Southbury, Turkey Street, Theobalds Grove and Waltham Cross.

Lioness line: the line is not fully closed, but TfL is running a reduced service between Kilburn High Road and London Euston. On Saturday, some trains from Watford Junction terminate at Kilburn High Road between 06:30 and 20:30, while corresponding services from Euston start from Kilburn High Road between 07:15 and 21:15. Similar reductions apply on Sunday from late morning into the evening.

Mildmay line: Sunday engineering works affect the north London orbital route during the morning and late evening. The published weekend programme includes no service from Gospel Oak towards Stratford until around 11:15 and a further late-night closure between Camden Road and Stratford after approximately 22:25.

Elizabeth line changes on Sunday

The Elizabeth line remains an important alternative to the closed Piccadilly line, but west London passengers should note that trains will not stop at Acton Main Line, Hanwell or West Ealing on Sunday 18 October. Passengers using these stations should plan to travel through another open Elizabeth line station and use local TfL services for the final part of the journey. This matters particularly because demand on the Elizabeth line towards Heathrow is likely to be higher than a normal Sunday while the Piccadilly line is unavailable west of Hammersmith.

DLR and Tram closures

On Sunday 18 October, the DLR is closed between Tower Gateway and Shadwell. The rest of the principal DLR network remains available, so passengers heading towards Canary Wharf, ExCeL or London City Airport can use Bank rather than Tower Gateway for their DLR connection. London Trams will have no service between Sandilands and New Addington throughout Saturday and Sunday. Passengers should use local bus services across the affected Croydon and New Addington corridor.

London Victoria: reduced trains Saturday, no trains Sunday

The most significant National Rail change occurs at London Victoria. National Rail confirms that engineering work will close some lines on Saturday and all mainline rail lines at Victoria on Sunday.

On Saturday, Gatwick Express trains between Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton will run to an amended timetable, while Southern services between Victoria and Clapham Junction or East Croydon are reduced.

On Sunday 18 October there will be no Gatwick Express services at all and no Southern trains to or from London Victoria. Southern services that normally use Victoria are being diverted towards London Bridge on an amended and reduced timetable.

Passengers travelling to Gatwick Airport can use Southern or Thameslink services between London Bridge and Gatwick. National Rail confirms that Gatwick Express tickets are accepted on those services at no additional cost. The London Underground station at Victoria is separate from the National Rail closure and remains available for Tube journeys.

No Southern trains between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction

Another important two-day closure affects Southern's cross-London service. National Rail says engineering work will close all lines between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction on both Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October. No Southern trains will operate between the two stations. Ticket acceptance is available on alternative routes including London Northwestern Railway between Euston and Watford Junction, the Lioness line, the Mildmay line between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction and selected London Underground routes. Journey times will be longer and Clapham Junction may be particularly busy because it is also handling altered Southern flows associated with the Victoria works.

London Euston and West Coast Main Line disruption

Network Rail confirms another weekend of West Coast Main Line works on 17–18 October, including track renewals between Rugby and Stafford and HS2-related work outside London Euston. Avanti West Coast will divert three trains per hour via the West Midlands, and services between London Euston and Birmingham New Street are altered. Trent Valley stations are served by rail replacement buses. The HS2 works also mean a reduced service into and out of Euston across both days. Passengers heading towards Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, the North West or Scotland should check their exact service rather than relying on the normal weekend timetable.

No direct Stansted Express trains from London

Stansted passengers face one of the largest airport disruptions of the weekend. Stansted Express confirms that there will be no direct train service to or from Stansted Airport on Saturday 17 or Sunday 18 October because of engineering work between Waltham Cross and Stansted Airport. The operator advises passengers travelling from central London to use London King's Cross and travel via Cambridge, changing there for a train to Stansted Airport. Replacement buses also operate on part of the affected corridor, but journey times will be significantly longer whichever alternative is used. Tickets are accepted on selected National Rail and London Underground services as part of the disruption arrangements.

Chiltern Railways strike: Marylebone remains largely operational

Industrial action is taking place on Chiltern Railways on Saturday 17 October, but this is not expected to close London Marylebone. Chiltern and National Rail state that the normal number of trains will run into and out of Marylebone and that most passengers should experience a near-normal service. There are nevertheless specific amendments, including no Chiltern service between Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa and four longer-distance trains operating over shortened routes. Passengers should therefore still check the journey planner before setting out.

Airport travel: Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted

Airport Main problem Practical alternative
Heathrow No Piccadilly line west of Hammersmith Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express from Paddington
Gatwick No Gatwick Express on Sunday Southern / Thameslink from London Bridge
Stansted No direct Stansted Express all weekend King's Cross to Cambridge, then Stansted

Will the closures affect major London events?

Yes, although the effect varies by venue. Wembley Stadium hosts the Houston Texans against Jacksonville Jaguars NFL game on Sunday, while The O2, ExCeL London, Olympia London, Kew Gardens and central London venues are also expecting significant weekend crowds.

Wembley: Wembley Park remains served by the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines. Long-distance passengers arriving through Euston should account for the reduced West Coast Main Line timetable.

The O2: North Greenwich remains served by the Jubilee line, so the principal route to The O2 is not part of the planned closures described above.

ExCeL London: Custom House remains reachable by the Elizabeth line. The Sunday DLR closure only affects the Tower Gateway–Shadwell section, so Bank provides another DLR starting point.

Olympia London: visitors should be especially careful with west London rail planning because there are no Southern trains between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction over the weekend.

Kew Gardens: the District line Richmond branch remains available, but passengers normally connecting through the western Piccadilly line may need to alter their route.

Check before travelling

Planned engineering work can still be adjusted operationally and live incidents can create additional disruption on the day. Passengers should therefore check the TfL Journey Planner or National Rail Journey Planner shortly before leaving, particularly for airport journeys, late-night travel and connections involving replacement buses.

For this weekend, the largest risks are straightforward: do not rely on the Piccadilly line for Heathrow, do not travel to Victoria expecting a National Rail train on Sunday, and do not arrive at Liverpool Street expecting a direct Stansted Express.
